  • After completing this course you will be better trained to enhance joy in children while they are building their cognitive and motor skills.

Did you know?

■ For many students, executive function is a better predictor of academic outcomes than intelligence quotient (IQ) and socioeconomic status (SES)

(Blair & Raver, 2015; Cortés Pascual et al. 2019; Micalizzi et al., 2019)

■ Executive function skills predict math and reading in higher grade levels

(Ribner et al., 2018; Magalhães et al., 2020)

Self-regulation skills predict academic, behavioral, and social achievement across a lifetime

(Robson et al., 2020)

The Key Is To

Empower children and adolescents with the skills to think, plan, attend, inhibit, and self-regulate.

When students develop their ability to think things through, pay attention, manage their emotions, resist their impulses, and plan the sequence of their actions they are better able to successfully learn, connect, and behave.

This Is Achieved By

■ Improving Executive Function and Self-Regulation Skills.

Course topics

Part I. Introduction Executive Function and Cognitive-Physical Activities Course
PART I includes a course overview with learning objectives.
Part II. The Ready To Learn Brain
PART II reviews the developmental precursors necessary to build a brain that is ready to learn. We discuss how stress adversely impacts the brain and offer evidence-based methods for supporting children in their learning, socialization and behavior.
Part III A. Executive Function Overview
PART III A provides an overview of executive function skills. Strategies for identifying cognitive, attentional and self-regulation deficits are provided.
Part III B. Executive Function Interventions
PART III B provides language and activities to help students become more mindfully aware of their executive function skills. Working memory, encoding and retrieval strategies are explored.
Part IV. Evaluation & Progress Monitoring
PART IV introduces the clinician, teacher and school administrator to tools you can use to screen for executive function challenges in your students and clients. We discuss the co-occurance of neurodevelopmental conditions and how to become better equipped to sort out co-existing conditions.
Part V. Organization & Task Completion
PART V explores strategies to helps students with organization, time management and progress monitoring. While to this point, we have addressed self-regulation, attention and memory, of interest to our colleagues is how to help students organize their materials, execute tasks and monitor their progress.
Part VI. Cognitive-Motor Movement
PART VI reviews the research and implementation of motor activities with increasingly complex cognitive components that help our students engage their self-refulation, attention, response inhibition and cognitive flexibility. In this module you have access to our proprietary programs used in classrooms and clinics worldwide.
Part VII. Language, Learning & Dyslexia
PART VII incorporates the work of Stacy Fretheim, CCC-SLP, Ann Alexander, MD and the team at Wellington-Alexander Center to provide you with information salient to treating assessment and treatment of dyslexia.
Part VIII. Bonus Interviews
In the final module, we take a deeper dive into some of the topics covered in this course with respected experts.
